Saturday night at Tobias de Macedo Street

The region between the Tiradentes and the Santos Andrade squares always seemed a bit grim, especially at night, with its bars odd, "movies" suspects and cheap hotels. The Tobias de Macedo Street links both squares. But the group in the bar, do not seem to be worried about it, instead, they seem to be enjoying the company of each other very much.

Posing for the photo on the steps of UFPR

Nothing is more traditional for graduating student of UFPR than doing a photo for the graduation call on the steps of the UFPR at Santos Andrade Square. I even believe that graduates from other colleges must use the same scenario.

Besides being the favorite stage for graduation photos, the stairs are also used for protests in general, for concerts or just to serve as a seat to watch the children play and chat with friends.

The Brazilian Soccer Team at Curitiba

The Brazilian soccer team is at Curitiba for the pre-season prior to departure for the World Cup in South Africa. The players and the coach Dunga arrived at Curitiba on July, 21st. The Brazilian team will stay in Curitiba until Wednesday, when they will head to South Africa.

The city of Curitiba has prepared a series of actions to mark the passage of the Brazilian Soccer Team in town. The fountain of Santos Andrade Square was painted to resemble the Brazilian flag. The Boardwalk of the Flower was decorated with green and yellow lanterns and streamers were hang on 141 street poles reminding the years that Brazil was champion. All the flowers of the Flower Street were replaced with yellow flowers.

UFPR and Santos Andrade Square

Before visiting the terrace of the building where my aunt lives, I never had the opportunity to see the UFPR and Santos Andrade Square from the top. It is a beautiful sight indeed, with the bonus of the Flower Street on the left side of the photo.

Curitiba and its hot summer

This morning, I was in the Praça Santos Andrade, waiting for our photography teacher (yes, I'm doing a basic course to try to post pictures at least tolerable), taking pictures randomly. Than I saw a tree with a twisted trunk and went to photograph it. On the way there, under a 35oC sun, I wondered what could be worse than suffering with the heat that is unusually punishing Curitiba in historical records. Well, it would be worse to be under such a sun, for hours and hours, wearing a very hot uniform, just like the garbage garbage guy of the photo.

Masses of hot air from the north of Brazil, preventing the advance of cold fronts, the El-Nino phenomenon and who knows what else, made this the hottest perior in Curitiba in more than 30 years.

UFPR - Universidade Federal do Paraná

The Federal University of Parana began its activities in Curitiba on March 1913 and can therefore be considered the oldest university in Brazil.

The first courses offered were Law and Social Sciences, Engineering, Medicine and Surgery, Commerce, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Obstetrics.

The picture shows the façade of the main building at Santos Andrade Square. Other important units distribuited in Curitiba like Reitoria and Centro Politécnico will appear in future posts.
